A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area has issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and two other officials, including the Clerk of the House, from sending any correspondence to the Chief Judge of the state regarding the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy
The court also barred the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving, forwarding, considering, or acting on any request, resolution, or impeachment-related document aimed at constituting a panel to investigate allegations of misconduct against the governor and his deputy for a period of seven days.
The ruling was delivered on Friday by the presiding judge, Justice F.A.
Fiberesima, following a motion ex parte filed separately by Governor Fubara and the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
In the ruling, the court granted the claimants leave to serve the interim order and originating processes in Suit No. OYHC/7CS/2026 and Suit No. OYHC/6/CS/2026, along with all subsequent processes, on the first to 31st defendants by pasting them at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly quarters.
Justice Fiberesima further directed that the court processes be served on the 32nd defendant, the Chief Judge of the state, through any judicial staff at the Chief Judge’s chambers within the High Court premises.
The court adjourned the matter to January 23, 2026, for the hearing of the motion on notice.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday resolved to continue with the impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy despite the court order.
In a related development, the four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn from the impeachment process and urged their colleagues to do the same reversed their stance, accusing Governor Fubara of being unyielding.
The political crisis in Rivers State has continued to generate intense legal and legislative confrontations, with observers closely monitoring the unfolding events.
