President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. This was contained on a press release of Nigerian Customs services’ verified Facebook page on Thursday.
Mr. Adeniyi’s initial tenure was set to expire on August 31, 2025. According to a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the extension will allow the Comptroller-General to consolidate on ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives vital to the success of the Tinubu administration.
Among the major projects Mr. Adeniyi is expected to drive to completion during the extended tenure are:
- The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
- The implementation of the National Single Window Project;
- Nigeria’s full execution of commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
President Tinubu commended Mr. Adeniyi’s dedication and visionary leadership, expressing confidence that the extension would enhance the Customs Service’s capacity to fulfill its core responsibilities, including trade facilitation, revenue generation, and national border security.
Mr. Adeniyi, a seasoned customs officer and reform advocate, was appointed by President Tinubu in June 2023 and has since led a number of initiatives aimed at repositioning the service for greater efficiency and accountability.
The Presidency emphasized that the extension reflects Mr. Adeniyi’s performance and the administration’s resolve to maintain momentum in critical areas of economic development and trade policy.
