Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to prioritize the collection and protection of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing them as the “bridge to a new Nigeria.”
In a message shared on his official page, Obi emphasized that the future of the country rests in the hands of the electorate, stressing that the greatest strength of democracy lies in the voter’s card. He urged citizens, particularly the youth, to resist voter inducement and instead use their PVCs as a weapon against corruption, injustice, and poor leadership.
“Your PVC is the voice of the voiceless, the shield of the weak, and the weapon of the poor for a better life, against injustice and bad leadership. I appeal to every Nigerian: get organised and make election rigging difficult,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor warned against vote trading, insisting that those who buy votes do so only to secure access to public funds. According to him, selling votes amounts to mortgaging opportunities for better schools, hospitals, and jobs.
Obi added that the desperation of politicians to buy votes is proof that every vote counts, and therefore, citizens must protect their ballots and use them to elect leaders with “competence, character, capacity, and compassion.”
He concluded with a renewed call for civic responsibility, stating:
“Our democracy is at stake. That is why I urge every eligible Nigerian to register, collect, and safeguard your PVC, and when the time comes, use it wisely. Vote for leaders who will put you first. Do not be intimidated, do not be deceived, and do not be bought. A New Nigeria is POssible.”
