Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, on Wednesday, paid a condolence visit to the family of late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.
Obi revealed that he had initially made efforts to attend the burial ceremony on Tuesday after visiting the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. However, his attempt to travel to Daura was hindered by unforeseen logistical challenges.
“Yesterday morning, after a condolence visit to the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, I tried to be in Daura, Katsina State to attend the burial of our late President Muhammadu Buhari, but all my efforts proved abortive, due to logistical challenges beyond my control,” Obi explained.
He said he promptly informed a member of Buhari’s family of his inability to attend, a message which was warmly received and understood. Determined to honour the late President, Obi fulfilled his promise by visiting Daura today.Accompanied by Senators Ireti Kingibe and Okey Ezea, as well as the Obidient Movement’s National Coordinator, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, Peter Obi joined Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno, and other dignitaries to pay final respects to the former President and console the bereaved family.
Obi recalled a memorable moment with the late Buhari during the 2022 presidential campaign.
“I recall vividly meeting with President Buhari in 2022 during my campaign. He said to me: ‘Peter, you seem to be everywhere and loved by the people. And I wish you the best. Please, if you win, do not forget the poor,’” Obi said.
The Labour Party leader noted that the words of President Buhari have remained with him and gained deeper meaning upon news of his passing.
Obi concluded by offering prayers for both the late President and the late Awujale of Ijebuland, whose deaths he described as a great loss to Nigeria.
“May the Almighty God, who has called both our late President and the Awujale of Ijebuland to eternal rest, grant them peace, and comfort their families and indeed our dear nation. May their legacies of service and dignity never be forgotten.”
Recall that Obi has come under criticism from some individuals including the former aide to the President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Okokri who were not happy with his absence at the burial ceremony of the late president without any public explanations.
