The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away recently. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The declaration comes as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by President Tinubu in recognition of the former President’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic growth and national development.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo noted that the holiday is a mark of respect for President Buhari’s lifelong dedication to public service, integrity in leadership, and unwavering commitment to national unity.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister stated.
He further encouraged citizens to use the day to reflect on the late President’s vision by promoting peace, unity, and patriotism.
As previously announced, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The Federal Government also extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Katsina State, and the entire nation. It prayed for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
