Abakaliki FC officials narrowly escaped tragedy earlier today when one of the team’s buses was involved in a road accident along the Ondo Expressway. The incident occurred as the team was returning from Lagos after participating in the President Federation Cup final.
According to an official statement released on the club’s Facebook page, the bus, which was conveying some members of the club, reportedly suffered a brake failure and collided with a moving truck from behind.
“To God be the glory, no injury and no life was lost. On our way back from Lagos after yesterday’s President Federation Cup finals to Ebonyi State today (29/6/2025), one of our vehicles (official’s bus) failed brake along Ondo express highway and hit a moving truck at the back. We thank God, we all are safe and sound,” the statement read.
The club expressed deep gratitude to God for preserving the lives of everyone onboard, stressing that no injuries were recorded despite the severity of the accident.
The Rice Boys had traveled to Lagos to compete in the prestigious Federation Cup final where they lost in a penalty shootout with the Kwara united.
The players were en route back to their home state when the incident occurred. The team’s supporters and football community have expressed relief and thanksgiving for safeguarding the players and the officials.
