History unfolded in Ebonyi State today as plans for a new Nigerian Army Training Depot officially moved from approval to execution.
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru on Tuesday received a high-powered delegation of the Nigerian Army led by the General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, Major General Oluremi A. Fadairo, in a decisive meeting with stakeholders and traditional rulers of Afikpo Local Government Area.
Following extensive consultations, Amasiri community in Afikpo LGA has been selected as the host location for the newly approved Nigerian Army Training Depot (NATD).
During the engagement, Governor Nwifuru formally sought and obtained the consent of the Afikpo people to allow the Ebonyi State Government issue a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the Nigerian Army, a critical requirement for the take-off of the project.
With all approvals now secured, construction of the military facility is expected to commence immediately.
The Nigerian Army Training Depot is a core institution responsible for transforming civilians into disciplined soldiers through rigorous physical drills, weapon handling, tactical training, and character development.
Existing depots in Zaria and Osogbo have produced tens of thousands of soldiers over the years. The decision to establish a new depot in Ebonyi State reflects the Army’s deliberate effort to expand training capacity, promote regional balance, and strengthen manpower development nationwide.
The economic impact of the depot is expected to be far-reaching.
Thousands of recruits, instructors, and support staff will significantly boost local commerce, increasing demand for food, transportation, accommodation, and essential services. Small businesses and local markets in Afikpo and neighboring communities are projected to experience sustained growth.
Beyond military employment, the project will create civilian jobs in construction, administration, logistics, maintenance, and artisanal services, while stimulating the informal sector.
Property and land values in the area are also expected to appreciate as demand rises for housing and commercial spaces, while federal presence is likely to attract improved road networks, electricity supply, and other public infrastructure.
Socially, the depot is expected to enhance access to amenities such as clinics, schools, and community facilities that will benefit both military families and host communities.
It will also strengthen civil–military relations through medical outreaches, water projects, and other community-based interventions, while promoting national integration as recruits from across Nigeria interact within the host environment.
From a security standpoint, a permanent military presence will serve as a strong deterrent to crime and enhance rapid response to security threats, while improving troop distribution and operational readiness across the region.
The Afikpo project adds to a growing list of strategic federal investments attracted under Governor Nwifuru’s administration.
Already, the Nigerian Navy is constructing a state-of-the-art Naval School in Oferekpe Agbaja, further reinforcing Ebonyi State’s rising profile as a trusted destination for critical national institutions.
These developments underscore the state government’s commitment to security, economic growth, and long-term development, while positioning Ebonyi State as a strategic contributor to Nigeria’s national stability.
