In a landmark move described as “unprecedented” and “unstoppable,” President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the full payment of allowances and match bonuses for Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons. This disbursement, which covers all games up to their final match against Morocco in the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for Saturday, July 26, marks a historic first in Nigerian sports.
According to the National Sports Commission, the payments were authorized on July 23 and are being processed through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The funds are to be disbursed immediately to players, coaches, and team officials—without delay, drama, or dispute.
Mal. Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, described the move as a major shift in athlete welfare and accountability under the Renewed Hope Agenda. “This is not just payment. It is policy in motion and clear evidence of a new era in Nigerian sports, where our athletes are no longer celebrated only in moments of victory but respected in the entire process,” he stated.
D’Tigress to be paid ahead of 2025 FIBA Game
In addition to the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s basketball champions, D’Tigress who are preparing to compete in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire are also receiving enhanced allowances, welfare packages, and performance bonuses. The team, aiming for a record fifth continental title, will benefit from the same standard of prompt and full disbursement.
“This is the kind of sports administration we are building at the National Sports Commission, one rooted in shared prosperity, dignity of labour, and a culture of trust,” Dikko emphasized.
President Tinubu’s directive signals a new chapter for Nigerian sports, where athletes are assured of timely compensation for their efforts. The National Sports Commission extended its congratulations to the Super Falcons for reaching the final and offered best wishes to D’Tigress ahead of their continental campaign.
“This will be the standard,” said Dikko. “As long as resources are available, what our athletes earn, they will be paid promptly and in full. What they deserve, they will receive.”
