Following the public announcement by the Ebonyi State Government Press Center for the official flag off of the State’s local and international scholarship grants to her indigent students spearheaded by His Excellency Rt Hon. Francis Nwifuru, the Governor on Saturday 18th January flagged off the ceremony, an event held at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Abakaliki.
Remember that early last year, the Governor has announced the willingness of his government to ensure rapid manpower development and youth Empowerment. Following this, he announced a scholarship opportunity which about 1000 indigents students of the state will be granted scholarships to pursue either postgraduate or undergraduate programs both overseas and within Nigeria.
On the Ceremony held at the Airport, 204 beneficiaries were airlifted from the airport to their respective universities of choice abroad. While the 541 beneficiaries who are to pursue their programs locally had already begun since last year. It is expected that about 96 other beneficiaries will be travelled any moment this year to bring the number of foreign Scholarship beneficiaries to 300 while the local beneficiaries will be made up to 700 to bring the total number to 1000.
Beneficiaries of this scholarship upon graduation are expected to make up the gamut of pioneer staff at the two new universities established by the state government.
In a similar report made by the special Assistant to the Governor on documentation, Mr. Boniface Nwankwo, the pilot overseas students Egbe Collins Okechukwu has successfully completed his Masters program in Biomedical Sciences from the East London University, United Kingdom credit to the State Government.

Meanwhile, in what seems to be a spoiler game, a PDP chieftain and social media personality, Mr. Nwoba Chika Nwoba (KSC) has claimed that one of the scholarship beneficiaries for the abroad studies allegedly said that the flag off was a mere “packaging”. He said this via a post on his Facebook handle. In the post, Chika claimed that one of the beneficiaries reached out to him alleging that the 204 abroad scholarship beneficiaries were taken to Lagos and were asked to go home after setting the media abuzz with the news of the scholarship.
“I suspected that there might be something like this as the cabal members running the Ebonyi State Government aren’t yet done with the state. It’s unfortunate” Nwoba Chika said.
