The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has raised the alarm over the circulation of fake and artificial intelligence-generated employment letters purportedly issued by the Commission.
The Commission, in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, said it had received reports of fraudulent employment letters bearing the names of individuals unknown to the NUPRC.
The regulatory body also disclosed that some unscrupulous individuals were allegedly extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public under the guise of helping them secure employment with the Commission.
According to the NUPRC, the activities of the suspected fraudsters have been reported to relevant law enforcement agencies, with investigations currently awaited.
The Commission urged members of the public to exercise caution and verify any employment-related information before making payments or providing personal details to individuals claiming to represent the NUPRC.
The NUPRC stated categorically that there is currently no ongoing recruitment exercise at the Commission.
It further warned that whenever the Commission decides to commence recruitment, the process will be conducted strictly in accordance with existing laws and government regulations.
The Commission therefore advised job seekers and members of the public to disregard fraudulent employment offers and avoid dealing with individuals demanding money in exchange for purported NUPRC jobs.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the use of fake documents and emerging artificial intelligence tools to make fraudulent employment letters appear authentic.
The NUPRC urged anyone who encounters suspicious recruitment offers or employment letters bearing its name to exercise caution and report the matter to the appropriate authorities.
